The gorge quickly narrows outside of the main part of the park, and increases in difficulty. So it's a pretty short run that's doable for a beginner. But the benefit to walking in is you will have a chance to scout the water and put in when you decide it's right for your comfort level.Reneenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1781111519203544556.post-71403439922941664862020-08-03T10:30:18.256-07:002020-08-03T10:30:18.256-07:00Thanks for this write up, it looks like in the fal...Thanks for this write up, it looks like in the fall, early September, this would make for a nice run into the State Park for a beginner, maybe a good bikeraft starter run?PHephttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14167393199560745476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1781111519203544556.post-57897978972050221932020-06-10T17:06:09.463-07:002020-06-10T17:06:09.463-07:00The bottom 20 (or 22ish I think) are well worth do...The bottom 20 (or 22ish I think) are well worth doing as well. It is a 9 mile hike in to reds over the pass or 22 miles upstream on a very good trail from the take out or you can hire a plane to fly you into Reds Ranch (well worth a meal stop or overnight stay but you need to reserve a head of time).
Grant Ritchie at the Minum Store (also your take out) could give you some names of pilots as far as the airplane option or possibly a car shuttle.
The upper is also worth doing but I would go in there with a strong crew and be prepared to do a lot of bushwhacking portages on blind corners, about one per mile for the first 20 miles.Kirkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03309753866415916164noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1781111519203544556.post-69374286162820132692020-06-10T13:19:00.592-07:002020-06-10T13:19:00.592-07:00Good to know. The Portage are horrible. The bottom 20 miles are easy class II to III (below reds ranch). I personally would not go above red unless everyone is a solid class IV boater who can boat scout and catch every micro eddy without hesitation. There are a couple people who want to join who are not strong kayakers and would want to portage the class III's. Lot's of new wood in the river from this years raging flows. Really fast with a lot of blind corners. The rapids below the gauging station at this flow are probably borderline class III. Don't bother going past the diversion if you can help, the river turns into a municipal death trap downstream.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17949765306778624907noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1781111519203544556.post-7314830254724920402017-05-16T12:25:54.914-07:002017-05-16T12:25:54.914-07:00I found a good thing to use to replace the sticks ...I found a good thing to use to replace the sticks are heavy duty zip ties, just cut them off and round and smooth the edges. the are flexible and not prone to cracking or breaking.Disclaimer.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13732465141069254348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1781111519203544556.post-7130148521335159362017-05-01T17:59:25.063-07:002017-05-01T17:59:25.063-07:00That might be doable! I have been a whitewater advocate/paddler for a long time now, and just recently found pack rafting in my life:). Personally I have boated from class I to class V solo for years, being solo adds a different aspect to any trip and can be very rewarding to the right people. The blanket statements of "never paddle alone" "never hike alone" "never climb alone" "it's not safe" only serve to imply someone else is responsible for your actions and safety in my opinion. Saying people should not boat solo makes as much sense as saying no one should paddle class V, class IV is so much safer so lets all stick to it. Accessing your skill level knowing the dangers and consequences while accepting that you are responsible for all your own action and have the confidence ans skills to achieve your goal are all factors to any solo venture. Being solo you will scout more, portage more and access every aspect of being safe much more than if you were in a group setting making you a stronger paddler in a group setting also.
Solo ventures are not for everybody and if you need someone else to justify solo paddling for you, then you are probably not the type to be paddling alone anyway, but for some people it is entirely OK and acceptable to do.
KirkKirkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03309753866415916164noreply@blogger.com
